Cognizant of the need to reach out to the wider public, FSS launched in March 2001 a radio program of reports and discussions on development issues. FSS currently runs two FM radio programs (“Dewel” - FM Addis, biweekly since 2001 and “Jember” - FM Hawasa, weekly since 2006). The Debub FM program has a very wide reach, being heard as far as Koka to the north.
The “Dewel” radio program was evaluated for the 2nd time in 2008. The evaluation result indicated the need for broadening of the program focus to include areas outside Addis Ababa. Encouraged by the success of the ‘Dewel’ radio program and with the intention of reaching a much wider audience, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) agreed to sponsor a new medium wave transmission of the program. An important breakthrough for the program was achieved with the beginning of transmission over Radio Ethiopia’s National Service (MW) since June 16, 2008. The National Dewel is a 20 minute radio program aired weekly on Monday from 11:10 Am – 11:30 AM.
The “Jember” radio program has been strengthened and the quality of the program improved with the employment of an experienced editor who closely works with the two freelance journalists to ensure the quality of the program. By the end of 2008, “Jember” solicited feedback from listeners and some ninety letters were received from places as far as Dessie and Asebe Teferi. Listeners expressed general appreciation for the programs transmitted by “Jember”.
The Debub FM 100.9 Radio Station is in the process of establishing five radio satellite relay stations which are expected to reach large areas of the country. The satellite station is expected to be operational before the end of the year. Whenever the station is operational, there is a prospect for FSS “Jember” radio transmission to be heard as far as Bahir Dar in the north and Moyale in the south including in the middle laying regions of Addis Ababa, Southern Shoa, Bale and Arsi zone.
