President calls for all-out effort to replenish denuded land

Addis Ababa (ENA)- President Girma Wolde-Giorgis has underscored the urgent need to launch all-out efforts with a view to reversing the perilous situation of forest resources in Ethiopia.

The president made the call here at the Addis Ababa Hilton late Saturday during a reception thrown after a 30- minute Amharic documentary; ‘Witinkit’ which could literary be translated as ‘Morass’ was screened.

Forum for Social Studies (FSS) produced the documentary that shows the ever-dwindling forest resource in the country and highlights the activities that should be taken to reverse the situation.

According to President Girma, all available science and technology alternatives should be utilized to maintaining what little is left of the country’s forest resource as well as to replenishing denuded lands.

Population pressures, poverty and lack of awareness are among the causes that triggered this situation, where forests are increasingly led to waste.

FSS manager, a leading researcher, said if unabated, the forest degradation is sure to entail a difficult time ahead.

Efforts so far launched to help reverse the situation should be redoubled and sustained as environmental concern is but the concern of all, Dessalegn said.

Organizations and researchers in the field as well as government officials attended the occasion.
