ETHIOPIA
Harvesting water will
boost Ethiopia’s growth

Addis Ababa – An environment researcher has said that Ethiopian
farmers should make use of water harvesting to deal with the
problems caused by irregular rainfall in the East Africa country’s
highland areas.
Dr Daniel Kassahun, a researcher at the Forum for Social Studies,
said that water harvesting would ensure food security, while
contributing significantly to economic growth.
Kassahun added that modern agriculture technologies would need to
be invested in to take full advantage of the benefits of a more
regular water supply.
He added that there could be further benefits too because water
harvesting could help rehabilitate natural resources, thereby
rolling back desertification.
Kassahun said that desertification was one of the reasons why
rainfall patterns were becoming more unbalanced and irregular
throughout the country.
